Fantasy Bond explores metaphysical states of ascension by illuminating the cyclical nature of time through recontextualized materials and objects. Materials: discarded mattress, bricks, cement, chains, soil, artificial fruit, artificial flowers, pins, styrofoam, plywood, recycled tarp, steel poles, super glue, nails. This privately owned land hosted an independent residency and exhibition space started by San Antonio artist Megan Solis. Its inaugural exhibition, Wild Ruins, Wild Orientations, questioned how art is made and experienced when free from a traditional exhibition space, in a land strange and energetically charged. The artists all made work that challenged institutional norms in modes of making and display. They ranged from performance that blured gendered pathways, to a composition of uncanny sculpture and sound; effectively opening up portals of blanketed history. It explores the cyclical nature of birth, decay and renewal, using a found mattress as an altar for crossing thresholds. Fantasy Bond exists in a liminal space between dreams and nightmares, presence and absence, where an object of function becomes a metaphysical site in which intimacy and disappearance intertwine, reflecting cycles of life and closure. Through sound, movement and sculpture, the performance channels the body’s language of mourning where the visible and invisible merge. This imagined union symbolizes the human desire to connect worlds that can never fully converge. Through sculpture, performance and music, he creates immersive zones where the interplay between liberation and control can be experienced. Guided by movement, collaboration and intuition, Cisneros produces work that engages with charged histories embedded in material, place and the body. These materials are treated as vessels of meaning which hold narrative weight and speak to cycles of use, memory and reclamation. Mythmaking functions as a central methodology in his practice, inspiring the formation of alternate realities that open space for dreaming and remembering. Justo Cisneros has been featured in exhibitions and collaborations with Contemporary at Blue Star (San Antonio), Artpace (San Antonio), Co-Lab Projects (Austin), guadalajara90210 (CDMX), MASS Gallery (Austin), and San Antonio Public Library. His contributions include Wild Ruins, Wild Orientations, an independent residency and pop-up sculpture park in Adkins, Texas, alongside site-specific kinetic theater works he has directed, soundtracked and choreographed, including Fantasy Bond, Bodybuilder, The Ripe Leash and Ultrasound. These efforts reflect his commitment to site-responsive, collaborative practices that engage with place, time and transformation. “I’m interested in exploring the relationship between deterioration and transformation by re-envisioning materials, sound and the body as poetic allegorical expressions. These pronouncements reflect on remembrance, imagination and change, revealing the ways in which the ephemeral can be transfigured into symbols of experience and metamorphosis. In this spirit, I’m drawn to the edges of things, the overlooked and the peripheral, where memory and fantasy merge through the intersection of sculpture, performance and music to communicate ideas beyond language. Building upon these intersections, my practice seeks to inhabit the space between reality and myth, illuminating the possibilities and truths that surface within this realm and are brought into focus. Rooted in an ethos of introspection and subversion, my work often evokes states of reverie and rupture, where personal histories and collective myths blur.
